Gentle, practical burn care for babies and children in East Delhi. Dr. Pritesh Maheshwari, MCh Paediatric Surgery (AIIMS), assesses scalds and minor burns, manages dressings and follow-up, and refers serious burns without delay.
Call 112 or go straight to the nearest hospital emergency department if the burn is large or deep, on the face, hands, feet, genitals, or a major joint, caused by electricity or a chemical, or if your child is struggling to breathe, drowsy or unwell. Do not wait for a clinic appointment.
Most childhood burns happen at home: a cup of hot tea pulled off a table, steam from a pressure cooker, bath water that is too hot, or a small hand on an iron. Many of these heal well with prompt first aid, a careful assessment and good dressings.
Some look small but are deeper than they first appear. Our pediatric burn treatment in Delhi is built around telling the two apart early and making sure your child gets the right level of care.
Dr. Pritesh Maheshwari is a paediatric surgeon who trained at AIIMS New Delhi (MCh Paediatric Surgery) and worked as a Senior Resident at AIIMS and Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya. For more than a decade he has treated surgical conditions in newborns and children. He sees families at Maheshwari Multispeciality Clinic, D-11, Krishna Nagar Main Road.
WHEN TO GO TO HOSPITAL
Is Your Child’s Burn an Emergency?
Go to a hospital emergency department straight away if:
the burn is large, deep, white, charred or leathery, or your child cannot feel it
it affects the face, eyes, ears, neck, hands, feet, genitals or a major joint
it goes all the way around an arm, leg or the chest
it was caused by electricity or a chemical
your child was near smoke or fire and has a hoarse voice, cough or breathing trouble
your child is a baby under one year, or seems drowsy, floppy or very unwell
there are other injuries from a fall or accident
If you are unsure, it is safer to be seen in an emergency department first. Once the hospital team is happy for your child to go home, we can take over dressings and follow-up.
WHILE YOU GET HELP
First Aid While You Get Help
1Move your child away from the heat source and stop the burning.
2Cool the burn under cool running tap water for 20 minutes. This helps most within the first three hours.
3Take off jewellery and loose clothing near the burn, but leave anything stuck to the skin.
4Cover the burn loosely with cling film laid over it, or a clean, non-fluffy cloth.
5Keep the rest of your child warm with a blanket while you cool the burn.
For chemical burns, protect your own hands, remove soaked clothing and rinse with plenty of running water. For electrical injuries, switch off the power before touching your child.

YOUR VISIT
What Happens at a Burn Assessment
The assessment
Dr. Maheshwari will ask how and when the burn happened, what first aid was given, and how your child has been since. He then examines the whole burn, checking its size, colour, blisters, sensation and location.
Burn depth can change over the first two to three days, so an early recheck is often part of the plan.
Your child will have pain relief suited to their age before the burn is cleaned and dressed. You leave with a written plan covering dressing care, pain relief, when to return and which warning signs need urgent attention.
Burn Dressing and Wound Care for Children
The right dressing protects the burn, reduces pain and helps the skin heal. The type of dressing and how often it is changed depend on the depth and location of the burn, so there is no single routine that suits every child. Some modern dressings stay on for several days; others need changing more often.
Keep the dressing clean and dry
Do not remove it at home unless you have been told to
Dressing changes are done gently, with pain relief given beforehand
HONEST REFERRAL
When Your Child Needs a Specialist Burns Unit
Some burns are best managed by a hospital burns team with paediatric anaesthesia, inpatient beds and surgical facilities. A small number of deeper burns need surgery, such as skin grafting.
If your child’s burn falls into this group, Dr. Maheshwari will tell you clearly and help arrange the referral.
THESE INCLUDE
Larger or deeper burns
Burns to the face, hands, feet, genitals or joints
Electrical, chemical and inhalation injuries
Burns in babies under one year
AFTER THE BURN
Healing, Follow-up and Scar Checks
Healing time
Superficial burns often heal within about two weeks. Deeper burns take longer and are more likely to leave a scar or change in skin colour. Healing time can only be judged once the burn has been assessed.
Come back early
If you notice spreading redness, swelling, pus, a bad smell, increasing pain or fever.
Scar checks
As the burn heals, tight or raised skin near a joint, hand or neck should be checked, because scars can limit movement as children grow. Where scar treatment is needed, we will guide you to the right specialist.
COST
What Affects the Cost of Burn Care
The cost depends on the burn and the care it needs. Hospital admission, anaesthesia or surgery, if needed, are charged by the treating hospital.
Ask the clinic for a clear estimate after the first assessment.

FAQS
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first if my child gets a burn?
+
Cool it under cool running water for 20 minutes, remove nearby jewellery and loose clothing, cover it loosely with cling film and keep your child warm. Then get medical help.
When should a child with a burn go to hospital?
+
Go straight to an emergency department for large or deep burns, burns to the face, hands, feet, genitals or joints, electrical or chemical burns, breathing problems, or any burn in a baby under one year.
Does every burn in a child need a doctor?
+
Not every tiny burn does, but any blister, broken skin, or burn on a young child is worth having checked. Depth is hard to judge at home or from a photograph.
Are hot water burns serious?
+
They can be. Hot liquids can burn deeply in seconds on a child’s thin skin, especially over a large area. Cool the burn and have it assessed.
Should I use toothpaste, ice, or haldi on a burn?
+
No. These can deepen the injury, raise the risk of infection and make the burn harder to assess. Cool running water is the right first aid.
How often does a burn dressing need changing?
+
It depends on the burn and the dressing used. Some stay on for several days. Follow the plan you are given and do not remove the dressing early.
How do I know if a burn is infected?
+
Watch for spreading redness, swelling, pus, a bad smell, worsening pain, or fever. Contact the clinic promptly, or go to an emergency department if your child seems unwell.
Will my child’s burn leave a scar?
+
Superficial burns usually heal with little or no scarring. Deeper burns are more likely to scar. Good wound care and follow-up help, but no one can promise scar-free healing.
Do you treat burns in newborns and babies?
+
Babies under one year with a burn should usually be assessed in hospital first. We can provide follow-up afterwards. See also newborn surgery.
Do I need an appointment?
+
For non-urgent burns and dressing follow-up, please call ahead. Serious burns need an emergency department, not a clinic appointment.
